Bitcoin is a high-beta expression of global liquidity in financial markets. This correlation is one of the most documented macro relationships a trader can track — though it is not constant and has broken down in several periods.
M2 expansion + 10-week lead indicator: bullish signal
Bitcoin's price action is deeply tied to global liquidity conditions — more so than any other asset class. This makes it a uniquely powerful macro instrument for both speculation and as a leading indicator of broader risk sentiment.
The mechanism is straightforward: Bitcoin has a fixed supply schedule and zero yield. Its price is therefore purely a function of demand, which is driven by the availability and cost of capital. When central banks expand money supply, excess capital seeks returns outside traditional assets, and Bitcoin — with its scarcity properties — absorbs a disproportionate share.
The correlation works both ways. During the 2020–2021 period, global M2 expanded by $20T, and Bitcoin rose from $4,000 to $69,000. During 2022, when the Fed contracted its balance sheet at the fastest pace in history, Bitcoin collapsed from $69,000 to $16,000 — almost precisely tracking M2 contraction.
Current global M2 is re-expanding at 6–7% YoY. If the historical correlation holds, Bitcoin's next 12-month window is structurally bullish. The 10–12 week lead time suggests this macro tailwind is beginning to materialize in on-chain accumulation patterns.
