Macro Analysis

Macro indicators are the fundamental building blocks of the macro trading framework. Unlike technical analysis (which reads past price patterns) or fundamental analysis (which analyzes company earnings), macro indicators measure the actual state of the underlying economy — and they lead asset prices by weeks to months.

The macro trading framework operates on three levels. Level 1 — Regime Identification: Determine the current economic regime (expansion, slowdown, recession, recovery) using composite indicators such as PMIs, yield curves, and leading economic indices. This sets the directional bias for all asset classes.

Level 2 — Monetary Policy Overlay: Assess central bank policy stance (hawkish, neutral, dovish) and trajectory. This determines the liquidity environment, discount rates, and relative attractiveness of different asset classes. A dovish Fed in an expansion is the most bullish possible macro configuration.

Level 3 — Sentiment & Positioning: Institutional positioning data (COT reports), investor surveys, and risk sentiment indicators (VIX, credit spreads) identify crowded trades and potential reversals. The best macro trades occur when fundamental conditions and positioning are misaligned.

The practical application: when M2 is expanding, the yield curve is steepening, PMIs are rising, and the Fed is cutting, go maximum risk-on. When M2 is contracting, the yield curve is inverted, PMIs are below 48, and the Fed is hiking, reduce risk significantly. Current conditions: mixed but leaning risk-on.
